Historic Chapel of Roses Storybook Roof Restoration

Huber & Associates and sister company Custom Shingles were privileged to be chosen for the roof restoration at the historic Oak Hill Memorial Park And Funeral Home Chapel of Roses in San Jose, CA. This chapel is the architectural masterpiece by Francis Harvey Slocombe, and designer of the legendary Mapes Hotel in Reno. It features an organically shaped bell tower, an undulating, Storybook roof with huge dormers, and an abundance of stained glass windows. The most striking characteristics of the Custom Shingles “Country Cottage Roof” are the rolled eaves and rolled gables. An essential component in these geometrically complex, wavy and undulating roof lines are the curved Cedar shingles, which set apart any roof from the ordinary. These roofs replace the English thatch-style roofs with smooth sawn shingles, steam bent to form the gentle rolling curves. Great care was taken to match every detail of the historic roof from 1920’s, with patterned to sometimes erratic undulations of the wave coursing, and by steam-bending nearly every area of the roof, including the eaves, gables, ridges, hips and valleys. All this while business continued as usual. The end result is truly spectacular.
