Venus De Milo Plaster Cast Restoration
Restoring a Venus cast from the old Vassar College collection.
This was an interesting restoration. The plaster Venus was purchased by a painter and instructor. He contacted me saying he had purchased the plaster and intended it for his school. When we went to pick up the sculpture and opened it we found a newspaper from the 1800's. The work is in two sections however for some reason a band of plaster was added around the lower part of the torso, which actually raised the upper section too high if compared to the original or other plasters. It had also covered up part of the leg crease. On examination I found that the belt of plaster could be removed with a slight hand using a chisel. Once removed I recast the roman joint in the seam line so it would sit properly into the lower section. The restoration took about three days.
